Business disruption sparks power change

The shockwave of escalating business costs continues to be felt across Australia with businesses bracing for further rising electricity bills as the Australian Energy Regulator announces new network transmission costs in the Northern Territory, Tasmania and New South Wales.

Across Australia the average electricity bill for businesses has increased 18 per cent compared to the same time last year, according to Energy Consumers Australia.

While many worry about energy affordability, Western Australian electrical wholesaler, Myelec Electrical Wholesalers has moved beyond the grid to mitigate rising power costs.

With nine branches across the state, Myelec Electrical Wholesalers took the leap more than 6 months ago into a more sustainable and cost-effective energy source with the installation of a Plico solar and battery system.

Peter Eiffe, Director of Myelec Electrical Wholesalers said while cost efficiency was the initial driver for exploring the world of solar and battery systems, securing a reliable power supply was fundamental in building an expanding reliable business.

“We’ve experienced power disruptions and feeling powerless to do anything about it. Losing power effectively grinds our business to a halt.  It’s this frustration that sparked the need for black-out protection, no business can afford to lose that much productivity and connectivity,” Mr Eiffe said.

The Myelec team recognised the disruption challenges they would continue to face if they did not proactively make a change.

“We decided to invest in a solar and battery system to ensure continuous operation and protection for our in-house operations such as our IT infrastructure which we need to service customers and projects.  Switching also offers substantial savings on energy and operational costs which is crucial for maintaining our competitive edge,” he said.

Specialising in providing high-quality electrical products and services to the mining, industrial, commercial and residential sectors, Myelec focuses on tailored solutions for a range of commercial and non-commercial projects.

“We wanted to go beyond words and demonstrate a real commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility.  This move aligns with our commitment to contributing to a greener future by reducing our carbon footprint and embedding sustainable energy practices throughout our business,” Mr Eiffe added.

“We looked at a number of providers, but Plico’s comprehensive solution and their approach to understanding our business and what we needed was pivotal in our decision-making process,” he said.

WA clean energy company Plico was established in 2019 and has experienced unprecedented growth, starting with household solar and battery systems with expansion into the business and commercial markets.

Plico CEO, Mr Robbie Campbell said when Myelec approached Plico they jumped at the chance to stabilise power reliability for the electrical wholesaler.

“They are in the business of power, so when they chose us to partner with them on a power solution it was a proud moment for our team. Two businesses within the energy sector - coming together to deliver a sustainable powerful solution,” Campbell said.

“Myelec no longer fear power disruptions, it’s business as usual – just better,” he added.

Mr Eiffe added that the best part of the new setup is the reliability and seamless integration it provides for the business.

“The battery storage capabilities ensure we have consistent power supply, even during outages or peak demand times. Most of the time we don’t even know there is a power blackout, we just power through” he said.

“The system has been performing exceptionally well and the 24/7 monitoring has been beneficial in allowing us to track our energy and optimise our usage and consumption. The ability to monitor the system remotely and see real-time performance data has been fantastic!” Mr Eiffe said.

“Having an in-house based data and communication back-bone supported by reliable solar and battery system sets us apart from our competitors,” he said.

Importantly Myelec has experienced a noticeable reduction in their energy costs where the system virtually covers all their power requirements. “The energy savings and reduced operational costs further contribute to our sustainability goals and overall business success,” he said.
