Solar Rebates in Australia

You may have encountered terms like 'solar rebate' and 'small-scale technology certificate (STC)' while researching solar systems for your property. These are a potential way of discounting the upfront cost of your solar system. Solar rebates exist throughout Australia but the exact details vary by state.

As a Plico member, you automatically receive the benefit of solar rebates, through our low weekly fees. We account for the rebate by lowering our member costs, so there’s nothing you need to do or calculate.

What is a solar rebate?

Solar rebates are also called financial incentives and come in the form of STCs. STCs vary in value, and the number you’re eligible for (i.e. the rebate you’re entitled to) depends on the size of the system you buy and your postcode. STCs are commonly used by solar system providers as a discount or rebate on the cost of a solar system or any other small-scale renewable energy system (such as solar hot water, small-scale wind, and hydro systems). Rebates have even been made available for the purchase of electric vehicles.

What solar rebates are available in WA?

The solar rebates in Western Australia vary based on factors such as the size of the system you install and where you live. This impacts the number of STCs you’re eligible for (and therefore the total amount). To illustrate how solar rebates work in WA, we can use an example. In the Perth Metro area, our standard 7.89kW solar systems will attract approximately 87 STCs, which at the time of writing is worth approximately $3,450. But don't worry – all STCs are handled by Plico and the credit is factored into your low weekly payment.  All you have to do is, on the day of installation, sign your STCs over to the local installer and we will do everything else from there.

You can find out more by visiting the Clean Energy Regulator website.

Do solar rebates decline?

Solar rebates can decline or increase over time depending on the current policies. In Australia, the government solar rebate is set to conclude by 2030, after which rebates will be unavailable. Between now and then, the solar rebate will reduce each year - so the best time to take advantage of them is now.

What’s more, with Plico you could be taking advantage of a range of benefits, including accessing your solar energy during blackouts and outages, servicing and maintenance of your system for 10 years, and control over your own power! Plico began right here in WA, and we’re passionate about making solar + battery energy as accessible as possible for West Aussies.
