Myelec | Commercial Solar + Battery | Case Study

Myelec leads charge on clean energy front with commercial solar + battery with Plico

System Solar + battery
Capacity 45 kW solar PV + 35 kWh battery storage
Products Suntech Power Ultra V solar panels
Alpha H30 inverter battery storage system
Installed March, 2024
Location Welshpool, Western Australia

In March 2024, WA company Myelec Electrical Wholesalers had their Welshpool warehouse equipped with a Plico commercial solar + battery system. With an expansive roof area and high energy demands, Myelec stood to gain significantly from implementing a Plico commercial clean energy system.

The Plico team installed 108 Suntech Power Ultra V mini STP415S-C54/Umh (415 W) solar panels on the warehouse building; a total capacity of 44.82 kW. The solar system was connected to a 34.56 kWh battery storage system, comprising 1 Alpha ESS STORION-H30-O (30 kW) and 1 Alpha ESS STORION-H30 (5 x M7790-S) to allow for generated solar energy to be stored and used during blackouts and when solar production declined.

The system was designed to optimise energy production and storage to maximise cost savings and environmental benefits. The Myelec server was also segregated onto the backup supply of the system to guarantee power supply during blackouts. This ensures that other Myelec locations and operations are not affected by localised power outages.

With nine branches across WA, Myelec provides quality electrical products and services to the mining, industrial, commercial and residential sectors. As a leader in the industry, Myelec has demonstrated how business can benefit from the latest clean energy technology. And those benefits are multitude.

Combatting the increasing costs of doing business

Amid rising electricity costs for business, Myelec has taken a proactive approach to reduce operational costs by investing in a commercial solar + battery system. The Myelec team has noticed a significant reduction in energy costs. On the days following installation, the system covered up to 99% of the total energy needs for the warehouse.

Myelec’s Director, Peter Eiffe says that switching to clean energy has delivered substantial savings on energy and operational costs, which he says is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge.

“The system has been performing exceptionally well and the 24/7 monitoring has been beneficial in allowing us to track our energy and optimise our usage and consumption. The energy savings and reduced operational costs further contribute to our sustainability goals and overall business success,”  Mr Eiffe said.

The company has moved beyond the grid to secure its own affordable and reliable energy, right from its rooftop.

Reliable energy is priceless for business

While cost efficiency was the initial driver for exploring solar + battery, securing a reliable power supply is also fundamental to Myelec’s operations.

Peter Eiffe knows well the impact that power outages have on business, from warehouse operations and machinery to in-house operations like IT and administration - everything is impacted.

“We’ve experienced power disruptions and feeling powerless to do anything about it. Losing power effectively grinds our business to a halt. It’s this frustration that sparked the need for blackout protection; no business can afford to lose that much productivity and connectivity.”

Myelec team members recognised the disruption challenges they would continue to face if they did not proactively make a change. Now they can continue to generate and utilise clean energy for their warehouse operations, even when the grid is down.

Looking to the future

Incorporating sustainability principles is central to Myelec’s business strategy, and an important part of its offering to clients. Making the switch to clean energy with solar and battery storage was one simple (but impactful) way Myelec could significantly reduce its environmental impact.

“We wanted to go beyond words and demonstrate a real commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility.  This move aligns with our commitment to contributing to a greener future by reducing our carbon footprint and embedding sustainable energy practices throughout our business,” said Mr Eiffe.

Together, these two forward-thinking WA businesses, Plico and Myelec, have delivered a powerful, sustainable solution that delivers significant cost savings and a reliable supply of clean energy.
